Nick Kounoupias is a UK solicitor and one of the best-known names in the international IP world. Nick has practised across all the IP sectors since 1986 both in private practice and in-house and during that time developed a formidable international reputation for his depth of IP knowledge and diverse strengths.
Nick is one of the UK’s leading experts in anti-piracy and anti-counterfeiting and possesses extensive experience of managing and conducting investigations in the IP sector and in particular is considered to have pioneered the use of private prosecutions of copyright infringers for the music industry.
Nick set up Kounoupias IP to provide guidance on IP issues outside of the field of traditional legal services.
Nick began his career at SJ Berwin and then moved on to Turner Kenneth Brown before becoming Head of litigation and Anti-Piracy at the Performing Right Society, a position he held for 16 years. He then joined DMH Stallard as a partner. Nick has held (and still holds) many senior industry appointments; Vice Chairman of the Alliance for IP (AFIP), a Board Director of the Federation against Software Theft (FAST), Chief Legal Counsel to Anti-Copying in Design (“ACID”) and is also a director of the company and its representative at the legal group meetings of the AFIP and the IP Crime Group, director of the Anti-Counterfeiting Group (ACG), and former Chair of its enforcement sub-committee, a founder and a former executive director of the cross-industry Copyright Hotline, and Chairman of the anti-piracy committee of the international music collecting society association BIEM Nick also holds a number of non executive directorshsips and is CEO of Fos Holdings Plc.
In 2014 Nick became a Freeman of the City of London and in 2021 was voted by his peers as UK IP Champion.
