Alun Williams featured in the property press commenting on planning decisions overhaul

Partner Alun Williams has been featured in Property Industry Eye, commenting on the newly announced measures by the government to overhaul the planning process.

It wants to modernise the planning approval process alongside revamping local planning committees. Planning officers would have an enhanced role, with increased training for committee members, as well as a national delegation scheme.

Alun says: “Certainly, the new policies announced do correctly target the area where the greatest blockage in the system occurs. Far too many planning committee decisions are delayed for a wide range of sometimes very mundane reasons.”

Alun goes onto explain that opponents often argue that reforms overlook community input, but the real opportunity for engagement lies in Local Development Plans. This approach allows developers to focus on clear objectives, rather than navigating the subjective opinions of individual councillors.

“When nimbyism and local politics also enter the equation then the route to obtaining a consent becomes tortuous,” Alun adds.
