Nick Gova comments on family court delays in Edward Fennell’s Legal Diary
Family Partner Nick Gova is quoted in longstanding legal journalist Edward Fennell’s Legal Diary, discussing the issue of delays in the family courts. Nick is featured in the ‘Legal Diary of the Week’ section – the main entry within the newsletter.
The delays have been ongoing for some years, with cases taking significantly longer than the statutory target of 26 weeks. Figures from 2024 show that more than 100,000 children were facing this backlog. This week, Lord Hodge, Deputy President of the Supreme Court, told a House of Lords committee that the ongoing problems are undermining the UK’s image as a strong rule-of-law nation.
Nick states: “The family court delays are now bordering on the ridiculous, leaving thousands of families in a prolonged state of uncertainty, which increases costs and causes huge amounts of emotional distress.”
