Nick Gova features in Law Society Gazette on landmark family court case

The Supreme Court is set to issue a landmark ruling in Standish v Standish on 2 July, which could reshape how non-matrimonial assets are treated in divorce proceedings. The case centres on whether wealth transferred between spouses during marriage - even for tax or family benefit - becomes matrimonial property.

Partner and Head of Family Nick Gova is quoted in the Law Society Gazette, saying the judgment “could clarify whether a gift made within marriage, even for the benefit of children, should be treated as a marital contribution or as a separate arrangement.”

He added that the ruling could have “significant implications for couples who structure their finances in this way, particularly where large sums or trusts are involved.”

The decision is expected to bring clarity to longstanding disputes around how and when non-marital wealth, such as gifts or inherited assets, should be shared - a key concern in HNW divorce cases.
