Nick Gova features in Today’s Family Lawyer on divorce stats
The latest figures from the ONS and Ministry of Justice show that no-fault divorce (NFD) has been widely adopted, now accounting for 74% of divorces – up from just 9% in 2022.
Partner and Head of Family Nick Gova is quoted in Today’s Family Lawyer, saying the data marks a significant transition from the old regime, where ‘unreasonable behaviour’ was the most cited reason for divorce.
“Overall, the statistics reflect not just legal change, but evolving social attitudes – toward cohabitation, later marriage, and less adversarial separations,” he said. “As family lawyers, we welcome the increasing clarity and fairness that the new system brings to clients navigating one of the most emotionally challenging chapters of life.”
The stats reveal broader trends: longer times to finalise divorces, rising financial remedy applications, and continued increases in domestic violence cases. Despite the NFD system allowing for joint applications, three-quarters of divorces are still initiated by one party – showing that many couples still prefer to go through the process individually.
