Michael Michaeloudis featured in the press on Government’s plans to improve life chances for working class communities

Michael Michaeloudis, partner and head of employment at Spector Constant & Williams has shared his views with the press on the Government’s plans to improve the life chances for low income and working class communities.

Bridget Phillipson, equalities minister, has announced the establishment of a new Class Unit within Government to improve outcomes for the working class. The plan will place social class on a par with sex, race and disability for the first time. The Social Mobility Commission will close.

Sitting within the Office for Equality and Opportunity, the new unit will work alongside other units focused on race, gender, sexual orientation and disability. As part of its remit, it will introduce a new socioeconomic duty that would legally require public bodies to consider how they improve the lives of lower-income families.

Michael comments: “This is a long overdue and welcome introduction. It cannot be correct in a society that strives for meritocracy, equality and fairness, to have a person’s life chances and success determined at birth. Two babies can be born on the same day, in the same hospital ward and one returns to a mansion and the other to a council flat. We know the latter will be significantly disadvantaged and has to overcome more obstacles in a society that is geared towards maintaining the status quo. This has to change.”
